Junior High Band

August 22, 2008

Welcome to the Instrumental Music Program at Rossford Junior High School. I hope this web site will prove to be a valuable tool for both students and parents. If you have any questions regarding the band program, please contact me via e-mail at  roneill@rossfordschools.org.

When does the band practice ?

Eighth Grade Band meets daily during eighth period. Seventh Grade Band meets daily during ninth period.

When will the band perform ?

There are four major performances during the school year. The junior high band performs with the high school band at a varsity football game, in a Holiday Program in December with the sixth grade band, in a Spring Concert in March with the high school band, and performs in an Awards Concert with all Rossford Bands in May. In addition to these four required performances, students also have the option to perform in the Halloween Parade with the high school band, solo & ensemble festival in the spring, in the Memorial Day Parade with the high school band and at Cedar Point in early June.

When can my child bring their instrument home to practice ?

NOW! and anytime they wish. Ask them to play for you. Reward them for practicing often. Buy them “fun” music to perform by themselves at local music stores. Do whatever it takes to keep them involved. School activities, like band, keep students focused on the positive and often away from negative activities.

Can they leave their instrument at school ?

Students have assigned lockers in the band room. If your child does not have an opportunity to practice at home during the week, they may leave it in their locker at school. I would like to see the students take their instruments home during the weekends, or at any other time they have available to practice.

Should my child take private lessons ?

All of our students receive instruction on how to play their instrument while in band class. Please keep in mind that I see the band for 46 minutes a day and the ratio of students to directors (during class time) averages 45 to 1 between junior high and high school bands. Private lessons can be a wonderful way to supplement what is being taught in band class as well any material that may not be absorbed by your musician due to the high student to teacher ratio at this time. I would highly recommend them.

Is it too late to start band ?

It is never too late to start an activity like band. We’ve started new students from sixth grade up to a senior in high school. The senior in high school progressed rapidly and went on to perform with the University of Toledo Rocket Marching Band for several years.

How can I contact the band director ?

Please call the junior high school phone number (666-5254) and ask for Bob O’Neill. You may also contact me via email at roneill@rossfordschools.org.

Can I receive an e-mail newsletter ?

Have your email address included on our email notification list. You will receive newsletters about performances and special events that our students are participating in. Simply email me at the link above with your email address. You can have as many as you wish to accommodate all family members, band members, grandparents, other relatives, friends. Please include the name of the band member that these are related to.  When important events arise, you will be notified well in advance with information about performance times, dress, program selections, etc.
